Last night was the always fashionable Digital Drinks LA, bringing together the coolest kids from old school Hollywood and new school tech & social media. This month it was held at the colorful Coco de Ville on La Cienega in West Hollywood. The crowd was packed as the event was sold out and over capacity. The line extended the street as people tried to hustle their way in. At one point the door seemed more like a new hot Hollywood club, with sexily-dressed women and industry name-dropping, than some cross-media industry mixer. One certain Lalawag writer had his phone ringing nonstop for the first hour with people trying to get in. Because as you know, in the near real-time world of Twitter, no one registers a day ahead. Sad for the people that didn’t get in, but I guess in this new economy, a $10 event (where jobs are known to be had) has some extra alcohol-induced value.
Here are some interesting bits and overheards from the event:
- Don Mosites of Streamy seemed positive about the simmering controversy between his trademarked name and its similar use in the unrelated Streamy Awards. “I’ll attend the Awards in March, *IF* they’ll let me in the door.” he said.
- The infamously controversial and disturbingly sexy blogger A.V. Flox described Digital LA host/creator Kevin Winston as a “A gazelle in a frat party” while trying to chase him down in her distractingly little black dress.
- The lovely Alexia Tsotsis, tech writer for LA Weekly, proclaimed her publication’s love for Lalawag.
- Chris “RockNRollGeek” Darbro from TechZulu talked about his Barcamp banana suit dance antics, and secret plans for its next social media appearance.
- In his New Year’s Resolution to make Lalawag on an even more regular basis, Francisco Dao (aka TheKillerPitch aka Elvis aka Chip) announced plans for a L.A. Tech Stripper Party where women dress as strippers and men dress as Chippendales.
- There were rumors of “GoSocial”, a new social media play into the music space by the dynamic female duo Majorie Kase & Kyra Reed.
When asked about covering the glamorous tech scene in LA, Alexia Tsotsis summed it up by saying “I don’t indulge in tired.”
