There’s an App for That

Something happened to me this year that some people would refer to as monumental. Something that many people dread, especially women. I turned 30. Thankfully my husband realized that even though I have never been one to care much about my age, reaching this milestone hit me a little harder than I thought it would. He saw the forced look of joy on my face approaching the big day and purchased the best gift he could have possibly given me, an iPhone.

Really, an iPhone? Yes, really. For those of you who have not experienced the Jesus Phone, you are surely missing out. My life has improved and changed quite a bit from this “phone” that can do everything from check your email to manage multiple girlfriends (not that I need that app).

Before the iPhone, I spent countless hours rolling my eyes at Sean while he sat glued to his phone tweeting and texting. I had a very basic phone and did almost no text messaging. Having previously worked in the cell phone business where you were given unlimited talk-time and texting, I found that I was all talked out. When I picked my phone I decided that I wanted something very basic that I could pull out in case of an emergency. This worked splendidly for a while, but then I started to see the advantages of having the interenet at my fingertips.

My life before the iPhone: Sit at home on the couch staring at Sean while he laughs about things on his iPhone. Print directions and drive to where the location should be, get completely lost, not find the place and have to go home. Sit in the car staring out the window while Sean plays on his iPhone. Rush home to check e-mail that needs to be returned by the end of the day. Sit in the movie theater waiting for the show to start and watch Sean on his iPhone. Go out shopping and try to find a store but have no idea if one is in the area, and end up having to drive home to check. Drive to Sean’s work to drop off his iPhone because he forgot it and can’t go a day without it. Receive a text message and forget to answer it because it takes 20 minutes to type anything out on a T9 keyboard. Lay in bed and watch Sean as he plays on his iPhone.

My life after the iPhone: HEAVEN. Now during all of those situations I now have this magical device in the palm of my hand that can fix all of my problems, except for Sean forgetting his phone, of course.

As you can tell, I used to be completely bored while Sean played on his iPhone. Now that I have my own, mundane tasks and waiting periods are so much more fun! Here are some of the apps I have found to be incredibly useful:

  1. Tweetie: Access to my 5 different Twitter accounts
  2. Pandora: Create personalized staions to stream music
  3. Y! Messenger: Instant Messaging via Yahoo Messenger
  4. Phone Flix: Netflix for the iPhone, update your queue
  5. CameraBag: Apply different simualtion effects to photos
  6. Whrrl Beta: Share and Tell your story through pics and text
  7. VR+ Lite: Turn your iPhone into a tape recorder
  8. Urbanspoon: Locate resturants by price, location and type of food
  9. Backgrounds: High resolution backgrounds updated daily
  10. Email’ n Walk: Activate the camera and you can see while you type

Looking for a good app?  I’d recommend asking fellow iPhone users when you’re out and about next. I have found quite a few of the apps I use by asking friends what their favorites are. Thank you Sean for giving me the best gift you could ever give a wife: something to do while you are busy.
