Friday Night is for Facebook

Personally I have never wanted a Facebook account. I enjoy Twitter because it’s like that low-maintenance relationship you have always looked for. She’s not picky, doesn’t care when you come around to tweet and doesn’t require you to return her emails. Facebook, on the other hand, requires a lot of maintenance and, as with most social networks, opens you up to a slew of people you would rather not connect with.

High school boyfriends and ex co-workers, I am sorry but I have no interest in knowing where you are in your life. There are however plently of people out there that do care and will be sitting at home tonight patiently waiting for the clock to hit 12:01. At that time Facebook will be implementing vanity urls, which they announced earlier this week.

Many people are speculating about what this means for users in the long run. Will people start spamming the hell out of Facebook the way they did Myspace? What if someone starts an account with your name, can they sell it to you? Certain limitations have been put in place according to Facebooks post yesterday:

If you signed up for a Facebook Page after May 31 or a user profile after today at 3 p.m. EDT, you may not be able to sign up for a username immediately because of steps we’ve taken to prevent abuse or “squatting” on names.

To celebrate this momentous occasion lalawag will be streaming live, as we do each Friday night, on tinychat (http://tinychat.com/lalawag). We will be discussing all things vanity and Facebook with a little gossip thrown in, this is lalawag afterall. If you want to join in the conversation and have some fun with us be sure to watch our twitter stream for the link. See ya later tonight!
