Murphy Goode: Not So Great Afterall

Imagine lounging around, sipping wine in your private estate, while brushing up on wine 101 and tweeting about the fabulous time your having. Now imagine you’re getting paid foe it. Sounds like a dream job to most, which explains why hundreds of people applied for the $10,000 a month position that Murphy Goode calls “A Really Goode Job“.

Applicants were asked to submit a 60 second video. Once completed they were uploaded to the Murphy Goode site where anyone could vote on their favorite. Here is where the confusion sets in. Many people were under the impression that voting for your favorite applicant would have some bearing on who would be picked for the top 50 finalists and go on to the next round, it turns out this was not the case.

MartinSargent received the most votes, two times the amount of votes as the person who came in second, but did not secure a place in the top 50.

I started to see the outrage that was going around the internet. Martin’s tweet was submitted to digg and the comments about Murphy Goode were less than kind. I checked their site to see exactly what they had to say in the rules for applicants wanting this position. Although not entirely clear, it does not state that voting tallys would impact the decision made for the final applicants.

Now whether or not this portion of their site has changed since the backlash, we do not know. We tried contacting Murphy Goode regarding the campaign that seemed like a good idea to most but has now become one of the worst marketing campaigns for branding. Unfortunately they did not respond, but we did get a copy of the email that went out to participants through our tip line. Here is what Murphy Goode had to say to them:

What do you think? Is this a total fail on the part of Murphe Goode for not explaining the details, or a case of people getting excited about an amazing opportunity and forgetting to find out exactly how this dream job would come to be?
