Today in tweets, I learned from @RyanGerritsen that you can turn your handwriting into a font. Being a lover of the good old paper and pen, I was intrigued. Often I like to make lists by hand because it is easier for me to read my own writing. So I decided to try it out.
The site, FontCapture.com, is still in beta howerver it works quite beautifully. There are four fairly easy steps you follow and viola! You have your very own font that you can name and that is immediately available to use from your PC or Mac. You will need a scanner and printer to complete the process.
Steps
- Download and print out the chart that you need to fill in. It’s a PDF format so you’ll need a reader to open it, you can download AcrobatReader or FoxitReader for free.
- Use a sharpie or felt tip marker to fill in the alphabet, and other characters needed, into the little boxes. There are lines on each box that tell you where the letter should go. The baseline is the imaginary line where the bottom of the the letter should rest. The ascending line is the top point that your letter can reach–anything higher than that and you risk it being cut off of the character.
- Scan your font page then upload the file and name it. Then click submit and wait a few minutes for the page to refresh.
- Preview your very own handwriting as a font and decide if it is to your liking. Then download it and install. Now you can use it almost everywhere!
Here’s how mine turned out:
