How many times have you had something you wanted to share, but your message was just a bit too long to fit into the 140 character world we live in? We have all been there, rewriting our tweet over and over trying to get it to fit and still make sense. Well you can all rest easy now, bit.ly is giving us two extra characters to play with.
Bit.ly, one of the most commonly used URL shorteners, announced an even smaller URL shortener today called j.mp. As far as we know j.mp has the shortest URL’s available, knocking Ow.ly out of position. With the growing number of sites that are available to shorten URL’s, features and length start to play an important role in deciding how you will link to your content.

Some of the features of bit.ly and j.mp include a drag and drop toolbar that you can use to shorten URL’s from anywhere, and a sidebar that will give you traffic info, conversations and history. All of the links that bit.ly and j.mp create are unique and will not be re-used. So you can be confident that if the link is saved, it will return that person to the correct site regardless of how much time has passed since you made it. Some of the other URL shorteners offer shorter URL’s but at a price, they reuse them.
Bit.ly will remain available for those who hate change, according to the site it’s not going anywere. But why not save yourself those extra two characters, your friends might need them for the RT.
