Apple’s usual M.O. for launching anything significant is to talk it up before the launch, either at its own press conference or during another major press conference for another project. This time, they did nothing of the sort. And I think we all know why. Can you say DRM? How about DMCA?
So here’s the scoop. An iDisk software update (v. 1.2) just got pushed out. While it has an impressive list of features, there’s something that has been added that isn’t actually listed in the features. Call it an Easter egg, a bonus feature, or any other name you want; it’s still the same thing. Here’s what it amounts to: streaming and sharing music from iDisk. Yes, you heard me right. Just think about all the digital rights lawyers who are flipping out right about now.
If you’ve downloaded the new iDisk update, here’s how to find the hidden feature:
1. First things first. You will need to upload the music files you want to stream. iDisk doesn’t support syncing music files, so they will have to be added one at a time. Currently, playlists and cover art are not supported.
2. Access your iDisk on your computer or mobile device.
3. Look for the Music tab and select the file you want to stream.
4. The app can now be closed and will stream in the background (iOS 4).
5. You can enable sharing of your music files by clicking on the share files icon next to each track.

And there you have it, ladies and gentlemen. Apple is quietly testing the waters to see how far they can push the big music companies. This is sure to be challenged in court. We’ll have more as this story develops.
