Twitter is one of the top used services on the web. It’s like having your finger on the pulse of day-to-day trends and Internet memes. Media sites have been tapping into Twitter to spread the word about their latest blog post or news articles for months via TweetMeme. Today Twitter announced that they would be launching their own button that can be implemented on practically any website, allowing readers to re-tweet a story to their followers directly from the site.
So what is the difference between this and what TweetMeme has been doing all this time? First, it seems to mirror other sites like Facebook, in that it allows you to edit the tweet before it goes out instead of just tweeting the title and link for you. Secondly, after a successful re-tweet, you could be sent to a page of suggested users to follow. But instead of this being a Twitter-generated list, it’s actually a list generated by the website you’ve been visiting. That’s an interesting concept, to say the least. Technically, this feature is being produced in partnership with TweetMeme, so all TweetMeme buttons are now redirecting to the new Twitter feature rather than their own redirect URL.
The Twitter button blog post lists almost 30 websites that have already implemented this new feature, along with information on how to get your site on board. Check out the video presentation below and see what you think.
(As you can see, we’re already on board!)
