Yesterday, Facebook announced a new look for profile pages on its blog. The “new” profile page has already started rolling out, and you can upgrade your profile now by clicking here. How will Facebook’s users react to these changes? Based on recent tweets, not as negatively as you might expect considering how resistant most people are to design changes.
Featuring a short collection of information at the top that forms a small bio and recently tagged photos all above your Wall, the new profile reveals more about your Facebook friends than the current one. Instead of the usual tabs across the top, the photos, info, and other tabs are now links on the left below the profile picture. Below that are friends and family.
As a Facebook user since 2007, I’ve endured and enjoyed Facebook’s format changes for a long time. I’ve seen the rise and fall of Facebook Gifts and enjoyed the incredible convenience of Facebook Chat. I’ve seen the News Feed become a live, self-updating feed and have enjoyed the addition of ‘likes.’ Although originally being resistant to most changes, I’ve noticed that I, like most users, get used to and learn to love design changes on Facebook.
The “New Profile” may meet resistance from some – especially considering how sensitive people can be about their profile pages – but because the “new profile” isn’t a dramatic change from the “old” profile page, I predict that users will adopt the new changes without too much of a fuss.
What do you think of the “New Profile” page?
