Ever wanted to be in a Sony Pictures movie, but were just too darn lazy to get down to their Culver City studios for an audition? Well now that barrier is removed from you, my promising young actor friend.
Sony Pictures has launched an online casting call service called “Face of the Fan,” where you can submit audition tapes for available roles in film or TV.
Some PR speak:
By visiting www.FaceOfTheFan.com, users nationwide can participate in online casting calls and contests for Sony Pictures’ properties – turning today’s fans into tomorrow’s stars™. With this ongoing program, crossing all of Sony’s platforms — film, television, and online – Face of the Fan will give the biggest fans a chance to get involved with Sony’s most popular franchises.
First off, gotta love a company that trademarks their taglines and makes sure that you know it in their press release. The executive at that spitballing meeting who coined it was so proud of himself that he couldn’t bear the thought of anyone else using his marketing poetry.
But I digress.
The only role up for grabs right now (An upcoming role in Mortal Instruments is forthcoming) is that of “a pivotal role as a female teenager” in an upcoming sequel to the Underworld franchise. Prospective actors need to submit a 2 minute audition tape of the following script for “Selene”:
The war had all but ground to a halt in the blink of an eye.Lucian, the most feared and ruthless leader ever to rule the Lycan clan had finally been killed. The Lycan horde scattered to the wind in a single evening of flame and retribution.Victory, it seemed, was in our grasp……the very birthright of the Vampires…Nearly six centuries had passed since that night.Yet the ancient feud proved unwilling to follow Lucian to the grave.Though Lycans were fewer in number the war itself had become more perilous. For the moon no longer held her sway.Older, more powerful Lycans were now able to change at will. The weapons had evolved, but our orders remained the same:Hunt them down and kill them off,one by one.A most successful campaign.Perhaps too successful. For those like me, a Death Dealer……this signaled the end of an era…Like the weapons of the previous century, we, too, would become obsolete.Pity, because I lived for it.
Hmmm. That “dialogue” sounds very pivotal all right. Pivotal enough to be the voiceover for a trailer. Or perhaps pivotal enough to be an edited introduction scene to minimize actual face time for the actress.
Listen, that may be a bit cynical, but you know that’s totally what the Sony executives are hedging for. It’s clearly a marketing campaign masked as an “open casting call.” It’s not a bad move for the company either. They look good in front of the public and if they actually get decent talent, they’ll have them at a cheap price. God knows how many people in this town are starving for their “break.”
But if you’ve got the chops, why not send a 2 minute video over? There are worse ways to get into the industry.
