Social Media Chatter Predicts Oscar Winners (mostly) [infographic]

Social Media Chatter Predicts Oscar Winners (mostly) [infographic]

We’d spend some time discussing the Academy Award show that happened last night except that there isn’t really much to discuss beyond the scathing reviews given to the telecast last night on Twitter and this morning via traditional media. Unlike the Grammy Awards acknowledging the impact of social media and technology by having Ellen Kay look at “Twitter” on an ‘iPad” between segments, the Oscars didn’t even pay lip service to the changing ways we follow live broadcasts.

Fortunately, social media monitoring company, Meltwater Group, decided to take matters into its own hands and track who people were talking about on Twitter, Facebook, blogs, comments, and more to win the best acting and picture Academy Awards in this handy infographic:

Get The Lowdown On LA’s Startup Scene [video]

Get The Lowdown On LA’s Startup Scene [video]

Not familiar with the LA startup scene and want a crash course on it from people in it? Our friends at Media Temple just put their finishing touches on a video piece from Twiistup 8 a couple weeks ago interviewing five of LA’s most influential entrepreneurs. They’ll go over items such as which LA startups to watch out for, how to find talent, figuring out an exit strategy, and they also give some ideas on how to evolve the local startup scene further.

Even if you think you’re hip to the scene, the video is still a must watch as these are some very smart people with great insights.

The Story Of How Netflix Pwnd Blockbuster [infographic]

The Story Of How Netflix Pwnd Blockbuster [infographic]

Though it was once nice to delight in the schadenfreude of Blockbuster Video’s troubles when they had ridiculous late fees and poor movie selection, seeing the facts laid out in this infographic almost make you feel sorry for the company. I mean, had they been smarter a decade ago they could have owned Netflix. Instead they’ve gone through a messy bankruptcy and are struggling to tread water in the wake of Netflix’s steady success.

China Blocks LinkedIn, Ramps Up Censorship Fearing Civil Unrest Following ‘Jasmine Revolution’

China Blocks LinkedIn, Ramps Up Censorship Fearing Civil Unrest Following ‘Jasmine Revolution’

VentureBeat is reporting that LinkedIn is now blocked in China, joining Twitter and Facebook as major social networking sites that have been caught by the “Great Firewall of China.” It’s no surprise that the Chinese government is a little ban-happy these days due to the recent revolutions in Egypt and Libya. Over the weekend, a small group of dissidents tried to organize a peaceful protest at the Wangfujing shopping district in Beijing called the “jasmine revolution.”

Break Media Plans To Quintuple Their Videos Produced In 2011

Break Media Plans To Quintuple Their Videos Produced In 2011

If you’ve ever used the internet before, chances are you’ve seen a funny video made by LA-based Break Media. Last year, Break produced around 200 videos, which is a pretty sizable number of original videos. Apparently it wasn’t respectable enough for the production house as they’ve just announced plans to produce over one-thousand videos over the remainder of 2011.

North Korean-themed Food Truck Roams Los Angeles Once Again

North Korean-themed Food Truck Roams Los Angeles Once Again

You read that headline correctly, there’s apparently a food truck called the Pyongyang Express selling “North Korean” food roaming the streets of Los Angeles (and San Francisco) again. I write “North Korean” in quotes because the food isn’t necessarily traditional North Korean food, given that it serves Kogi-esque Korean tacos/burritos/quesadillas.

Before you get all patriotic and start rounding up your posse to protest this “Communist” threat, you should know that it’s merely a clever marketing maneuver by LA-based video game publisher, THQ, to promote their upcoming game, “Homefront.” It’s a shooter game set in the year 2027 where the North Koreans have become an international power with significant nuclear capability and have invaded the United States.

Watch Kobe Bryant Face Off Against Bruce Willis And Kanye West

Everyone knows Los Angeles is the entertainment capital of the world. Anyone who still had doubts on that fact can just look to the events hosted in LA this month – music’s Grammy Awards two weeks ago, the NBA All-Star game this past weekend, and the upcoming Academy Awards this Sunday.

What could be a better way of celebrating this than by watching a Robert Rodriguez-directed Nike commercial/movie about Kobe Bryant defending his shoes from Kanye West’s army of zombie basketball players?
