3D Laser Backpack Recreates Interior Environments With Ease

Laser. Backpack.

Don’t those two words just sound natural when combined? Apparently they do to UC Berkeley professor Avideh Zakhor as she and her team have constructed a Laser Backpack that can be used to capture 3D models of building interiors. It’s not as visceral as pew pewing people with laser beams as you strut down a corridor, but still cool nonetheless.

With the data captured by the backpack, architects can better study buildings, 3D animators and video game creators can better recreate environments, and, heck, I’m sure that heist men like Danny Ocean would have use for one of these things for casing a joint before a robbery. The thing still looks a little bulky to walk around town with, but I’m sure that’ll get worked out once they put this baby into production.
