Every group of friends has one. That self-proclaimed “foodie” who always whips out the camera at every meal to take a picture and alert the internet to what they are eating. You may not think it’s necessary, but for some people the ritual is almost as habitual as giving thanks before the meal. Why is this?

Marketing analyst site 360i did a study of Facebook photo trends to see what sort of food photos people are sharing. You can read the full research paper at the bottom of this post, but if you’re a more visual person, you can check out the below infographic instead.

They seem to suggest to marketers that there’s a huge opportunity to get branding into food picture shares because of the low rate of branded visibility in most food pictures today. Personally, I think it’ll be a challenge to get people to go out of their way to take pictures of branded products because you’re usually either taking pictures of food you and friends have made or at a nice restaurant. Few people are going to want to snap a picture of that Lean Cuisine and Diet Coke they quickly microwaved for lunch. But who knows, bribing people tends to be an effective, albeit costly one.

What do you think? Will you be more open to sharing branded food photos?
