Turns out American photographer Ansel Adams spent a little time in Los Angeles during the start of World War II. During that time he shot photos for a Fortune magazine spread about the booming Aircraft industry here.

These photos are unique because they aren’t like his typical work, that of Yosemite and various domes. In fact they show a very interesting side of Los Angeles during this age. A time when LA still had parking problems and everyone built widgets for Lockhead Martin instead of Facebook.

#Crunchup Photos

I’m just back from a quick trip north to attend the TechCrunch RealTime Crunchup (say that 5 times fast). Like most TechCrunch shindigs it was a pretty solid event. A healthy crowd eager to “tap” the real time web. I joked with former LA resident and now SFWeekly editor Alexia Tsotsis, “What the hell would we be doing now if we didn’t have Twitter?”. Yes it almost seems like that little birdie managed to save our entire space from another crash.

Instead of bombing we’re bursting with sentiment based aggregating geo-targeted real-time delights. Of course those concepts are way too much for a normal web user, just right for us geeks though. So while I didn’t leave seeing any huge breakaway ideas or products, I continue to see some great innovations around the real time web. Perhaps one day this spaghetti like mess of data can be distilled into something amazing. Or at the very least, give us more ways to broadcast to our friends exactly what we had for lunch.

At the very least they can still afford to blow a ton a cash on a great event. The ratio may have been 1 girl to every 99 guys, but the hand rolled cigars and drinks were free.

Violet Mae is leaving her post at HeavyBagMedia to take a job with Fiji water. lalawag was able to confirm via Twitter DM this week. Violet has accepted the position of Marketing and Social Media Coordinator for the pricey (but delicious) water brand.

Since Violet is a little shy she hasn’t said much about this publicly. For us that represents a great chance to both embarrass and congratulate her. If you have had the pleasure of meeting or getting to know Violet well, lucky you. She’s one of the more genuine folks in the local scene and likely to have a bright future.

So please take the chance to send Violet out a tweet and make her feel loved. Just don’t fret if you don’t get a reply right away. Turns out she’s spending some time in Paris before starting the new gig. Rough life huh?

Twitter Conference Nightlife Photos

I was in meetings most of yesterday so I missed a lot of the Twitter Conference Los Angeles. From what I’m hearing the event went really well. Who knew it could be so much fun to learn how to put 140 characters into a little box. ;)

I did however make it some of the most important parts of any conference, the after hours mixers and parties.

Geek Pool Party at Citrusbyte

Will Jessup graciously let a bunch of the LA tech folks invade the headquarters of his company Citrusbyte, which happens to be a mansion equipped with pool. The idea was to relax and recover from the night of Karaoke at the Roxy the evening before. Upon our arrival we found a bunch of hooligans in the street. Francisco Dao decided that Tony Adam’s car was in need of immediate protection from the sun and decided to wrap it in saran wrap for him. Beer included in case Tony got thirsty.

We finally made it inside and found that the pool party had a nice mix of people, great food, games in the house and plenty of drinks to go around. The sun was blazing hot enough, especially in the valley but the one major fail of the party was the ice cold pool. We are talking sub arctic here. A.V. Flox and Robyn Cohen were in no mood to let this slow them down, and after heating up on the grass, took a dip in the pool to do a little photo shoot, sports illustrated style. Hailey Bright spent some showing us her bathing suit skills as well. Seriously, does anyone know someone at Maxim we can contact?

Many of the guys were sporting swim trunks and showing a bit of leg, but I have to say I am sad that we missed Paige Craig in his banana hammock which was scheduled to appear and did not. Sarah Townsend braved the sun in her bikini which made more than one tech geek take notice. Gregarious was on on drink detail and did a fantastic job of supplying me with margaritas. Brett Petersel was still in town and being grilled the grass by A.V with her handy flip while Todd Cohen was getting in on the action and being rubbed down with a special blend of Hawaiian oils by his wife and yours truly.

Overall it was a great day in the sun with friends and at one point there was also whipped cream and strawberries involved but we soo don’t want to get into that. See more photos from the pool party in the video below by Mike Prasad. Big thanks Will and Citrusbyte for hosting!

The recent GIT event, The New World of PR, was scheduled to take place downtown at a bar, however due to the influx of people and some unfortunate audio issues the entire panel and event had to be relocated. Luckily the restaurant Weeneez located next to the bar was happy to play host.

Never underestimate the power of a woman like Robyn Cohen who was determined to not only keep the event going, but to also make sure everyone had a great time. Big thanks to Robyn for putting on such a great event, challenges and all.

Cinespace Is Over Capacity

Notoriously over crowded local hot spot Cinespace gave a bunch of geeks the fail whale last night.

It seems the venue booked both the Hollywood Web TV Meetup, and rap concert on the same night. This resulted in an interesting mashup of Twittering geeks moshing with LA hip-hop-artti. Local photographer Wmmarc was there to capture some of the madness, for both our amusement and the Fire Marshall’s records.

We hit up Diggnation live at the Knitting Factory in Hollywood last night. It certainly was a unique intersection of all walks of Internet life. There was heavy converging of rumors and back stories, I think I’ll just give a few hints (a la Page 6 style) and let the photo mastery of @wmmarc do the rest of the talking.

She looked adorable in her new short hair cut.
They wanted to meet me but were too shy to say hello.
She was on the sideline, but really belongs on the stage.
He is too young, dumb and full of cum for this much attention.
She wore her glasses to drive the Digg nerds wild.
He is not making nearly enough money off his unique talents.

Ceci N’est Pas Une Oil Pipe

Notable photographer Thomas Hawk was recently in our fair city, photowalking and doing what he does best. Along the way he managed to get harassed by not 1, but 3 separate security/cops who wish to redefine your right to take photographs in public. He details all the encounters over on his blog.

“Unfortunately our photowalk around the Port of Long Beach was not without incident. Three times we were blinted while photographing. I’ve been stopped plenty of times while legally shooting in the past. Most of the times I’ve been able to be respectful but insistent on my legal rights to shoot wherever I’m shooting. Every so often though an incident turns into a more serious altercation. ”

We can’t help but like the Hawk here at lala, his take no bullshit attitude both online and offline is refreshing. He has been challenged like this countless times before, each occasion stepping up to defend his rights (and yours) while he professionally documents the exchange and reaches out for support. He usually he gets it too. The Port of Long Beach’s Media Relations Department has already responded and are looking into the issue.

LA and The Valley Collide, Drink Heavily

While I was painfully birthing this site over the weekend, about half of the LA Tech Set — the techno Rat Pack coined by marketeer-extraordinaire Brian Solis — headed up to Sonoma’s wine country. The occasion? Well, drinking of course. Oh, and it also happened to be Brian Solis’ birthday. Happy birthday, big guy, thanks for returning the kids safe.

I recently attended a coworking lunch get together at the Loews Hotel in Santa Monica, CA. Essentially, a group of techies get together to share a workspace and a few ideas. As far as the Loews for an office, well you could certainly do worse. In fact, how one could get any work done in such a nice environment, I don’t know.
